On Saturday My friends and I had the opportunity to Attend Holi Festival of Colors in Spanish Fork Utah . Holi is a traditional Indian holiday to celebrate a few different things, but mainly to celebrate the coming of spring. All of this takes place at the Krishna Temple , and is an all day event.
I had seen pictures of the festival from previous years and looked like so much fun, but I had no idea why it was celebrated. So before going down to celebrate with thousands of people I decided to study up on the religion and the Holi Festival. The festival Is names Holi after a woman named Holika who was a witch of sorts and could not be burned in fire because she had a cloak that kept her safe. Because of the cloak, she would walk through fire with babies to kill them.
There was an atheist father who had continually tried to kill his son because he constantly prayed to Lord Vishnu. No matter how hard his father tried he never died. His father then asked Holika to walk his son through the fire in order to kill him. Right before Holika walked the boy into the fire, a wind blew the cloak onto the boy and Holika was burned in the fire.
At the festival they have a bonfire and burn a dummy as a symbol of Holika burning in the fire. As they light bonfire the throwing and celebrating begins! Here are some pictures and videos form our FUN day experiencing different cultures!
This is a video of the throwing..... imagine being in the middle of that. Yup it was really hard to breathe, but so worth it!
